Martin Odegaard reveals how he tried to persuade Erling Haaland to join Arsenal and says unfortunately for Gunners Man City have made a great transfer

Erling Haaland had a weekend to forget in Manchester City colours but Martin Odegaard has no doubt his Norway teammate will be a success.

The striker, who joined the Premier League champions in a £51million transfer, wasn’t at his best during City’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Community Shield on Saturday.

Haaland’s first competitive match as a Man City player proved to be the stuff of nightmares for him

With Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian stranded it seemed harder for Haaland to miss this chance, but he did…

When City were 1-0 down, Haaland spurned a glorious chance, miscuing a volley when trying to head the ball was the better option.

And in stoppage-time the 22-year-old, who scored 85 goals in 88 appearances for former club Borussia Dortmund, hit the crossbar on the rebound from just six yards out.

Fans on social media had a field day at Haaland’s expense, but plenty have come out in defence of the player, who’s an undoubted top class striker.

One of them is Arsenal star Odegaard, who insists his pal will get the goals Man City are keen for.

Odegaard also revealed he tried to get Haaland to snub City for the Gunners.

“We speak almost every day, we have a group on Snapchat with some of the guys from the team so we speak there a lot,” Odegaard told

“He’s a great guy, great player and I think unfortunately for us he will be a great signing for Manchester City! For sure he will score some goals.

“I wish him all the best except for when we play them. It will be fun to see him in England.

“When all the Arsenal fans were posting pictures of him and me I would send it to him. I tried but unfortunately it wasn’t enough… he just laughed.”

Unfortunately for the new skipper, he failed in his mission to bring Haaland to the Emirates

Odegaard, 23, is Haaland’s skipper with the national side and has now taken on a more senior role with the Gunners, too, having been named the new first team captain.

Like Haaland, there was a lot of hype early in his career and while the striker developed in Austria and then Germany, Odegaard was snapped up by Real Madrid at 16.

And that early promise has been on display ever since making the move to London in 2021.
